Here are some common signs and symptoms of vein problems:

  • Aching, pain

  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Darkening of the skin (in severe cases)
  • Sores that don't heal
  • Numbness or burning sensation in the legs

Complications

Some people only suffer the cosmetic embarrassment of visible veins in the initial stages, but it is difficult to predict how quickly or how severe those veins will progress in their disease state. Varicose veins do not get better by themselves; they worsen slowly and progressively, often leading to severe complications.

Severe progression will start with irritation of the skin around the ankles, swelling of the feet (worse at the end of the day), and discoloration of the skin. Finally, eczema (dry flaky rash), phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) and ulcers (skin sores) may occur with poor healing. Large varicose veins are easily damaged by a minor injury, resulting in profuse bleeding. For these reasons, it is important to have a conversation with a doctor about your legs.
