Surgery

Surgery has a very limited role. Newer non-surgical treatments such as laser treatment and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy have replaced surgery for the vast majority of patients. Surgical treatment is often reserved for very specific cases. We recommend that you discuss your options with a board-certified Phlebologist.

There are two main types of surgical procedures used to treat varicose veins:

Ambulatory phlebectomy - In this procedure, a physician makes a series of tiny puncture holes along the vein and then takes out small segments of the vein. It is usually done on an outpatient basis and can involve one or more veins.

Vein stripping - This requires an inpatient hospital stay and performed under general anesthesia (to be asleep for the procedure) or an epidural (a local anesthetic injection into the back that numbs the lower half of the body). The operation generally requires numerous incisions, depending on the number of veins treated.
