Our Comprehensive Treatment Approach

One of our most frequently asked questions is: Why does it take more than one visit? We like to explain our comprehensive treatment approach by using an analogy. The superficial venous system is much like a tree. It has a main ‘trunk’ which runs from a patients groin down into the ankle and foot area. On the back of the leg, the trunk runs from the back of the knee to heel of the foot. It’s important to treat the problem where it originates, which is in the trunk of the tree so to speak. We use laser technology or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) to eliminate the problem vessel at its source. This can be 1, 2, 3 or more lasers if needed. The trunk is treated in segments; above the knee, below the knee and on the back of the leg. Once the ‘trunk’ has been treated, we can now treat the branches of the tree using a chemical agent which is introduced into the vessel. This agent causes the wall to spasm, seal shut, and slowly be re-absorbed by the body over time. These visits are part of our follow up and utilize ultrasound guidance.

This comprehensive approach is the reason so many patients get results they have been previously unable to achieve. VCPA’s Continuous Growth and Grand Opening of our Oakdale Clinic

Our newest clinic location in Oakdale, MN, opened in June, providing care to patients in the eastern suburbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, and western Wisconsin. Providers in this clinic will be Dr. Margaret Guthrie and the newest member to our team, Kimberly Nguyen, PA-C. Kim has previously served as a Physician Assistant at Sports & Orthopedics Specialists located in Edina. Additionally she has held positions at Children’s Hospitals & Clinics of Minnesota and St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, MN. Kim will also be seeing patients in our St. Cloud office which opened in spring 2012.

September will be another month of celebration for us with the opening of our newest clinic and corporate headquarters located in Minneapolis, MN. Information related to our Grand Opening events and festivities will be following soon.

We now have a brand new treatment for spider veins that are too small for injection sclerotherapy, or that have not responded to laser therapy. This treatment system uses a hair-thin probe to direct high-frequency energy at spider veins to seal them off from outside the vessel. The result is a treatment that affects very little of the surrounding tissue and does not produce scarring.

Varicose veins may contribute to the formation of spider veins. Improper blood flow, and the excess pressure often present in diseased veins, may accelerate the formation of spider veins. Varicose veins, if left untreated, could lead to permanent skin discoloration, sores that are slow to heal, or even blood clots.

The only means of obtaining the RDMS credential is by examination. Applicants are required to pass two comprehensive examinations to earn the RDMS credential: a physics examination, and a specialty examination for their particular area of practice.
