5 Things To Know About Varicose Veins
- Varicose veins and venous insufficiency can affect people of nearly all ages, and is more common in people 45 years and older.
- Men can get varicose veins, too. Many men believe that it is a women’s disease and do not seek help until their disease is more advanced.
- There are several risk factors for varicose veins, including heredity, excessive weight, elevated hormone levels and larger blood volumes during pregnancy, sitting or standing for long periods and advancing age.
- You can have varicose veins or venous insufficiency with no visible, bulging veins. Signs of underlying problems include swelling of feet and ankles, darkening of the skin around feet and ankles, sores that are slow to heal, excessive bruising and dry, flaky skin.
- The symptoms of varicose veins are often attributed to other causes. Patients may think their legs feel tired because of advancing age or lack of exercise. Restlessness during the night may be attributed to Restless Leg Syndrome. These, and other symptoms such as aching, heaviness and cramping, may be caused by poor circulation.
Left untreated, varicose veins can lead to more serious conditions such as leg ulcers, bleeding veins, permanent discoloration of skin around the ankles or even blood clots.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) seals veins permanently, does not require hospitalization, and allows patients to return to most normal activities immediately after treatment. Treatment is covered by most insurance companies.
If you think you may have concerns about your legs consult a vein specialist.
